However, recent molecular studies have exposed genetic factors that suggest a more biological origin for behavior. An attitude tends to be a belief about something, it usually describes what we as individuals deem as being correct (positive) or incorrect (negative) way of doing something. For example my attitude towards people who steal is one of contempt is a negative attitude. As far as I am concerned I have no sympathy for them or remorse if they get caught. That said the thief maybe a first and one time offender and has other issues I do not know about so my attitude towards that is based on a very stereotypical generalisation, as it is something I would not do. However the fact that I would not do it shows that my attitude toward not stealing is a positive one. It is possible though that our own attitudes can be so strong that we become ignorant to other peoples values, opinions and needs. This theory was first recognised in the 1960’s, most notably by behavioural theorists Chris Argyris and Edgar Schein. The psychological contract theory usually refers to the relationship between an employer and its employees, and specifically concerns the mutual expectations of inputs and outcomes. These both have an effect on each individual’s beliefs, values and attitudes within the work place. The psychological contract theory is usually seen from the standpoint or feelings of employees, however for this to be fully appreciated it has to be understood by both parties. This theory is basically the fairness or balance perceived by the employee, for example how the employee is treated by the employer and also what the employee puts into a job. Both of these ultimately show values, beliefs and the attitude of the employees but it also shows an insight into them for the employer, as the employer may believe that the way the employees are treated is fair but the employees see it as unfair. The way that this theory is understood and applied to our relationships, inside and outside of work essentially defines our humanity, for example, Respect, Compassion, Trust, Empathy, Fairness and Objectivity. This theory is relevant in my role as it allows me to understand what effect my actions as a manager/ employer have on the attitudes, beliefs and values of my employees or team. It allows me to assess my own beliefs, values and attitudes and decide if they are having a positive or negative effect on the team, customers/suppliers. My attitude towards these is I keep my work and private lives separate. The next stage on this theory is the Safety needs; I believe that this is one of the most important areas within the workplace, ensuring that the employees, customers and the visitors to the site are always safe. My Attitude towards this is that these are a must and not a choice. My values, beliefs and attitude towards this stage make this a high priority than maybe another stage within the Maslow hierarchy theory. The next stage within this theory is the belongingness and loved stage, relationships outside and inside work. My belief is that everybody likes to be liked or loved. So I treat everybody the way I wish to be treated. My attitude towards this stage is that I want to be liked and loved and may leave me at times to being a little lenient on people or members of the team. The fourth stage of this theory is Esteem, this encapsulates, reputation, achievements etc. I believe that all of these need to be enhanced and that it can only be done by hard work. My attitude towards this stage is that I want to be the best at whatever I do so I strive to excel, so the impact I have with this stage is very goal driven to keep getting better and always enhancing my reputation by proving and showing what I am capable of. The final stage to this theory is the self-actualisation, my belief, values and attitude impact this stage the most, because I always want to improve, I not only see this stage as a self-analysis on myself on how I can get better and how I can learn, but it also allows me to analyse myself and the effect that I have on the people around me. (Gill, 219) This is a poor argument considering that Christianswere a minority group for thousands of years. While Gill does not feel thatother faiths are untrue, he says that the only faith with a clear view ofreality is Christianity. Observe, for example, an object under a microscope. Attempt to get it into focus. But, unless the object be absolutely flat, youwill get one level in focus and not another. You will not be able to see it allat once, and you will perhaps pass some levels altogether. Gill does not, however, provide any reason toassume that Christianity is seeing the truth any more clearly than the othermajor world religions. This doesnot prove that the truth as seen through the Christian microscope is anyclearer that when the truth is viewed through any other religionsmicroscope. Gills point about denials is well made, however. Theonly thing to beware of is denial. It is on the plane of denials that we fallfoul of one another. (Gill,220) Gill says that if Christianity is removed from the process of work, thework(wo)man will be lowered to a subhuman condition by degrading labor andfocusing on profit-gaining ends. For Gill, this is the true threat of theMachine Age. The effect of the Machine Age is to secularize human life, toabolish the Christian criterion of holiness, understood both morally andintellectually. (Gill, 235) Gill does allow that machines may help toalleviate some of the suffering that exists in the world, but he has noconfidence that the influence of capitalist industrialism will be overcome. The spirit which has animated merchants and industrialists and financiersfrom the beginning of the Machine Age, whether in big business or small, is notthe provision of social amenity or the relief of suffering, but theaggrandizement of themselves. (Gill, 235) For Gill the only hope for humanitylies in the creation of a Christian world, a world based on Christian faith,ruled by Christian thought, and moved by a Christian will. (Gill, 236) Iagree with many of the values and ideals that Gill espouses. It is obvious thatsomething must change, particularly with regard to the overemphasis on theprofit motive. I do, however, disagree with his notion that these ideals canonly be applied through the template of Christianity. Christian leaders haveshown themselves to be no more fair or humane than non-Christians. Neither hasthe influence of Christian religious leaders, particularly Catholic leaders,been proven superior. If fact, the countries most deeply entrenched inindustrial capitalism are predominantly Christian. Any challenge to the statusquo, whether issued by a Buddhist or a Christian, would be an excellent start inthe effort to change the way the world views work and working people. One day this year, as I was walking by my perpetually empty locker, I was struck by an idea. I cannot identify what sparked its conception, but as my idea started to grow, thinking of possible solutions and analyzing and assessing feasibility issues began to consume me. My father calls this a "designer's high," and it was very familiar to me. I've experienced it often while collaborating with my robotics team, and in the hours I've spent with my father on design concepts for his prefabricated homes. Still, nothing I had worked on before was similar to the feeling this "out of the box" idea had triggered. Growing strawberries in a high school locker seemed fairly simple at first. Despite knowing that this is not the typical habitat for strawberry plants, I knew from my green-thumbed mother that strawberries are among the easiest fruits to grow. Many students and teachers became interested in my project, yet were skeptical of my botanical prowess and quick to conclude that a plant could not possibly receive its basic necessities in a locker, which didn't have proper ventilation, was hot and humid, and was shielded from both sunlight and any source of water. Still, I was determined to make this work. The unfriendly habitat and logistical obstacles did not deter me. My horticultural roots stem from my mother and elementary level biology. It wasn't until this year that my knowledge expanded beyond this casual level into a realm where biology, chemistry, and physics found beautiful, synergistic intersections. I was determined to apply what I had learned and got to work. Due to the lack of electricity and direct sunlight, I decided to use a solar panel paired with a light sensor on the outside of my locker to power a strong, blue LED light, which is best for photosynthesis and plant growth. A friend taught me how to solder and helped me create the solar panel setup, which turns on the blue light only when it is dark outside so the plants experience the proper light cycles. I also set up a system to slowly water the plants automatically. This involved a series of drip bottleswhich another friend had for his old, now deceased, pet guinea pigarranged to drip into each other and then onto the soil. Having addressed the issues of light and water, I focused on the need to circulate air. Leaving the door closed would provide essentially no circulation and would create a hot and moist environment, making the plants more susceptible to mold. After experimenting with various designs and a 3D printed prototype, I came up with an extension of the latching mechanism on the inside of my locker, which I called the "strawberry jamb." The jamb, which I cut using our school's CNC router, sufficiently boosts airflow by allowing the door to remain ajar about two inches while still maintaining the integrity of the existing locking mechanism. I made a beautiful wooden box, emblazoned with the laser-cut engraving "Strawberry Fields Forever" and provided proper drainage onto a tray inside the locker to avoid water damage to school property. The strawberry plants are now growing in my partially open locker providing a topic of conversation and much commentary from students walking by. What began as a seemingly improbable idea fed my passion for creative thinking and mechanical engineering. With its glory, the World Fair Exposition brought with it racism. It was ruled by the politics of rage. If the blacks had been represented, one could say that the Civil Rights movement would have happened a lot earlier than the 1960s because many people would have seen their progress since slavery and the blacks would have demanded to be treated as equals. There was also an issue of gender even before the Fair had started. During the building of the World Fair, women were not included as workers at all. They were expected to stay at home to take care of the kids and have dinner on the table when their husbands returned from work. They were treated as if all they could do was to stay at home and were incapable of bringing money in the family or take care of it financially. Another major setback was the separation of the social class. Only the upper class white men were allowed to show off what they had and everyone else was limited. Whites were portrayed as rich, powerful, and fearless during the parade while the lower and inferior class, such as African-Americans and Native Americans, were being restricted to take part of the white city. At the end of the Exposition Grounds, on the corner of Wallace and 63rd Streets, H. H. Holmes started making his plans. It was said that he killed approximately 200 men, women and children; however, the courts could only prove nine actual killings due to the fact that only small bone fragments remained in the three-story house castle and the bones that were recovered from his torturous rampage could not be used to identify who the dead people due to the lack of technology. H. H. Holmes had been incarcerated on insurance fraud charges when the Pinkerton Detective Agency started probing into the disappearance of his best friend, whom he had killed so he could collect the life insurance. Battle tested, the Agency ended up by catching up with Holmes. By then a lot of people were missing or dead but it should not have been this way because he could have caught earlier but H. H. Holmes moved faster than society and society was not ready for him. The time he lived in aided him tremendously. A train trip took a couple of weeks to reach their destinations so it was not natural not to here from a relative for a long time and this made it impossible for one to know if the person was actually missing. Most of his victims were women because once they arrived in Chicago for the World Fair; they had no idea where to stay so they stayed at the Castle. As H. H. He certainly would have had fewer victims and could have definitely been caught earlier. America, presumably Chicago, wanted to outdo Paris and thought that things such as the gruesome murders that were happening in London would never reach their home towns. At the end, America did better at both ends because they did a lot better than the Paris Exposition and they also inherited H. H. Holmes, America’s first serial killer. This book was very gripping and many of the things were quite surprising and unbelievable to say the least.
